  1. General Requirements
    Requirements to become a Life Insurance Agent in Kentucky:

    1. You must be at least 18 years of age.
    2. Complete the required coursework for Life and Health Insurance (40 hours). The Kentucky Department of Insurance requires that this course is completed in a classroom setting. Self-study is not approved (see Step 3).
    3. Submit the required forms and applications including the Individual License Application, proof of financial responsibility, Criminal Background Check Report and your Certificate of Pre-licensing Course Completion (see Step 5).
    4. Register to take the state exam.
    5. Pass your state exam.
    Requirements to become an Health Insurance Agent in Kentucky:

    1. You must be at least 18 years of age.

    3. Submit the required forms and applications including the Individual License Application, proof of financial responsibility, Criminal Background Check Report and your Certificate of Pre-licensing Course Completion (see Step 5).
    4. Register to take the state exam.
    5. Pass your state exam.

    Requirements to become a Casualty Insurance Agent in Kentucky:


    1. You must be at least 18 years of age.
    2. Complete the required coursework for Property and Casualty Insurance (40 hours). The Kentucky Department of Insurance requires that this course is completed in a classroom setting. Self-study is not approved (see Step 3).
    3. Submit the required forms and applications including the Individual License Application, proof of financial responsibility, Criminal Background Check Report and your Certificate of Pre-licensing Course Completion (see Step 5).

  2. Steps To Licensure
    1. Complete all the required coursework
    2. Submit the required forms and applications including the Individual License Application, proof of financial responsibility, Criminal Background Check Report and your Certificate of Pre-licensing Course Completion to the Kentucky Office of Insurance licensing division.
    3. Pass your state exam.

  3. Exam Information
    Once your application is approved by the state, you will receive an Authorization to Test notice from the Kentucky Office of Insurance.

    You can schedule for your exam by calling the Examination Section of the Kentucky Insurance Licensing Division at (502) 564-6004 or via email to: DOIAgentLicensingMail@ky.gov

    An exam fee will apply. If you fail to pass your exam the first time you will be required to re-register and pay an additional fee.

    Testing Locations

    Examinations are given daily at the Agent Licensing Division's offices in Frankfort at 8:30 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., and 11:30 a.m. All applicants must have a scheduled appointment to sit for the examination(s).

    In addition to Frankfort, Kentucky insurance exams are offered at 10 regional locations through an agreement with Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS). The examinations will be offered at the regional sites on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at 10:00 a.m. local time.
